Author: J.R.R. Tolkien
I read this book in 2020, and was clearly not in the best mood when I read it. See my review then. I decided I wanted to give this trilogy another try because I never made it past the first book back in the day, and I am trying to read through all the great classics. I am also watching the Peter Jackson movie after I finish each book which has been fun. One other small reason I decided to read these now is I find a petty sense of joy from going on Amazon Prime and watching the old Lord of the Rings movies and completely ignoring the Rings of Power that they spent $1B making.
I still don’t love this book. It gets a lot better in the second half in my opinion. But I did appreciate the story a lot more this time around and felt reasonably bought in/interested. I also finished the Two Towers recently and enjoyed that one a lot more.
One absolutely shocking bit. The line in the book is “You cannot pass” rather than “You shall not pass” as so famously quoted in the movie. Reading “You cannot pass” in the book just felt wrong.
