Annihilation

Annihilation

Author: Jeff Vandermeer

This book was a little weird. Ordinarily I am ok with weird, even encourage it sometimes. But if it’s going to be weird, it has to be good too, and I think this book lacked some of that “goodness”.

Maybe it was just a little slow? Or the ending was unsatisfying? I can’t quite put my finger on it.

Premise is these explorers are exploring this mysterious area. There have been many previous groups of explorers, but they either die, or come back all psychologically messed up.

There is this big “tower” in the book (that goes underground, instead of up). And it seems to be “alive” in a way, almost like they are walking into a creature, with a heartbeat.

That’s about it. The group described in the book has everyone die, except for the main character. The main character gets an inkling that perhaps some of the previous people who disappeared when exploring are now part of the ecosystem, like there was a dolphin with strangely human eyes that was mentioned at some point? I don’t know. I am writing this a couple months after reading, so a bit jogging my memory here. But if it was good enough, I would have remembered/spent the time to write out more details here.
